Diving for Liberty

I can't seem to Comment using my browser. Sorry this blog entry sounds more like a comment. I've never seen so many images of The Statue of Liberty, destroyed. Feminist reading, anyone? Who wants to see her drown? Who wants to replace her with a statue of an androgynous alien in the same color of green? The statue of Alienation. Anyway, my interview with Weasel is scheduled for noon, next Thursday at Yat's. I'll keep you posted about the results.

Gerry Canavan's Collection of Post-Apocalyptic Statue of Liberty Images

Granted not all of his images are entirely post-apocalyptic, some are just plain futuristic, he has assembled an impressive collection of the Statue of Liberty in various states of distress.

Here is a sample of my favorites.

From WWI propaganda

From the Speilberg/Kubrick film "Artificial Intelligence: AI"

The classic imagery from "Planet of the Apes".

From "Independence Day".

There a bunch more that interest me. The blogger has done a great job. Link.

He also wrote an analysis on "the post-apocalyptic fantasy" that is headed right where I am going. I urge you to read it for the integrity of this magazine project. It is not long. Link.

I urge you!

Hello

I regret to inform you that you have been invited to post in this blog.

The purpose of this blog is to share material, and administrative details, pertaining to the glorious eternal magazine of truth currently known as Aftermath. It is also available for random noises, streams of barely consciousness, and other horrifying and disturbing literary events. I do not intend to share these noises with the public.

Allow me then to share my first animal noises:

Today I wanted to explore how to balance features in this highly informing magazine of the future public. In this regard I started to think about how to balance articles (is this the correct word for all thing fiction and non?).

The first thing that came to mind is the binary of the pre-apocalyptic(and currently apocalyptic)/and the post-apocalyptic. This is a pretty significant binary in the sense that one is filled with tension and worry while the other could have some element of relief and/or deflation. I think it would be a good reading experience to encounter articles this way..tension release tension release etc. Not specifically in that order but you get the idea.

This got me to thinking of other binaries that I would like to be aware of.

literal to genre / vs. interpretive of genre
-------------------------------------
actual post-apocalyptica/ The Great Depression; The fall of the Roman empire; personal loss

depressing / vs. hopeful
-------------------------------------
survivalistic; destructive/ rebuilding; improving society; independence

realistic/ vs. surrealistic
-------------------------------------
realities; speculative realism/ vs. hyperbole; absurdism; meta

I know we have been talking about deconstructionism a lot more than normal, lately but binaries are useful. In fact I'd venture to say that deconstructionism and structuralism are a binary in of themselves.

The usefulness of this type of binary awareness is that it can be used to balance articles within an issue, and balance issues with each other.

Can anyone think of any other binaries?
